Science: Onion Root Reflection

Thursday, January, 21 2010 Science Class.  During Science class the 6th grade statrted looking at onion r oot cells which are the biggest cells, we were learning about cell division and we wanted to see cell division in action  .  Onion roots are easiest to see, espicialy with a microscope.  First we put one medicine cup of HCl (Hydrochloric acid) then a one medicine cup of Carnoy.  Then we transfer an onion root tip to the HCl cup for 4 minutes.  After 4 minutes we take the root tips out of the HCl cup and into the Carnoy cup.  After 4 minutes in the Carnoy cup we took the root tips out and cut it with a scalpel and luckly no one got injured.  Then we covered the root tip with a few drops of toludine blue, after 2 minutes we put a couple of drops of water on the tips.  Then we put a glass cover on and then we watched the cell.  Some peoples project was successful but mine was unsuccessful :( But it was really cool looking at the different phases of cell division on other people’s microscopes :)
